Disclaimer: No affiliation with Ensight Media. this app was purchased in October at my own expense.

Motivation: Radio Alarm is a good looking little app. I came across it while I was desperate to find an app that can listen to steamed Internet radio stations and also double as wake up alarm. Radio Alarm was a good looking app and at around US$2, I decided to give it a go.

User experience: The app looks good. From the images shown here, it’s obvious Radio Alarm went with the art style of the old radio alarm and it worked well. The app simply looks good. The user interface is clean and easy to use. I have used this on both my iPhone 4 and iPad.

Features include:

– listen to shoudcast streams
– find radio streams from the shoutcast directory and flag as favorite
– able to manually add radio stations not listed in the shoutcast directory
– sleep (ie. Radio auto turn off after a preset time)
– alarm (add multiple alarms like the iPhone clock app and select to wake up to sound effects that came with Radio Alarm, a radio stream, or a song in the iPhone iPod app)
– if stream is unavailable for whatever reason (no connection, stream becomes cut off, etc) the alarm will use a preloaded sound instead to ensure you don’t miss the alarm
– small touches like “fade in” timer for alarm, “fade out” timer for sleep timer, etc

One disappointment was that the couple of Australian radio stations I really wanted to listen are not available in the shoutcast directory that came with the app. When adding them manually, both came back as being a format that Radio Alarm was unable to connect to despite both being shoutcast streams (aac and aacp formatted). In comparison, both stations were able to stream correctly with the iPhone safari browser.

When contacted both over Twitter (responded the next day) and email (responded a week later) over this matter, Ensight Media replied that they hope to resolve the issue with their next upgrade. While very apologetic in their replies, no date was offered on when the fix is coming.

Summary: This is a good app and easily worth the $2. The user interface is clean and simple, and the app has many user friendly features that help make waking up a more pleasant experience. Disappointment over the incompatible stations brings frustrations as safari was able to stream these stations and yet the app could not.

Overall, 3.5 stars.
